This spring we completed the replacement of the lock pontoons at Premier Sovereign Harbour in Eastbourne. It was a two stage process with first one lock having its end-of-life pontoons removed followed by being fitted with its new pair, the second lock then went through the same process. This allowed the 800-berth facility to remain accessible throughout.
Lock pontoons are different to regular pontoons. They have to be engineered to handle the dynamic water levels within locks, ensuring stability and safety during the locking process. They are also built to withstand the pressures and movement in locks as well as the wear and tear that comes from their frequent use, including exposure to strong currents and varying water levels.
