Return to the River Fal

Return to the River Fal

It was back to the River Fal on the Tregothnan Estate following our earlier project a short distance upstream on the River Truro tributary at the start of the year. This time the assignment was the direct replacement of a walkway leading out from the shore to an existing single hammerhead pontoon.

Two metres wide and 48 metres long, the walkway was constructed using six, Walcon System 21 pontoons reinforced to cope with the strong tides and fitted with non-slip GRP mesh decking.

The walkway was once again anchored on the shore by I-beams that were installed back in 1944 and held in position by chains leading out to the ground anchors that moor the hammerhead pontoon. Their original purpose was to brace an embarkation point for battle tanks being loaded on to landing craft prior to being taken across the Channel to Normandy for the D-Day landings. The facility is now used by cruising boats and dinghies accessing the swinging moorings in the river.
