WALCON MARINE COMPLETES SOLENT AREA CONTRACTS WORTH NEARLY £2 MILLION Walcon Marine, the market leader in the design, manufacture and installation of marinas and yacht harbours around the world, has just completed a number of prestigious contracts in the Solent area with a contract value in excess of £1.8 million. Walcon Marine recently finished a new berthing installation for the Royal Yacht Squadron in Cowes. Using Walcon’s successful System 21 pontoon equipment, the new facility offers Squadron members sheltered berthing at all states of tide and direct access to the shore via a bridgehead and walkway. Walcon was able to use its versatile shallow draft barge Walcon Wizard to install the piles that secure the pontoons, thus offering a complete in-house solution to all the berthing requirements. The berths are fully serviced using Sureline Electrical Modules equipment and the new facility was formally opened by HRH the Duke of Edinburgh in April. Also in Cowes, this time at Cowes Yacht Haven, Walcon has completed the piling and installation of a new outer berthing pontoon and floating breakwater, which the large number of visiting yachtsmen will find a huge improvement over the old low freeboard pontoon. Using the solid and durable SF Pontoons from Sweden, for whom Walcon is agent in the UK, the new pontoons each weigh 50 tons, give nearly one metre of freeboard and 3.5 metres of width. The 120 metre pontoon length was piled using 762mm diameter piles by Walcon Wizard, Walcon’s self-propelled piling barge and was re-aligned with Cowes Yacht Haven’s new north basin breakwater. The old piles and breakwater were removed. Further west in Yarmouth, Walcon Marine has also just completed new residential and visitor berths for Yarmouth Harbour Commissioners. Using Walcon’s System 21 pontoons, the 50 new berths are right in front of the Harbour Office and have a walk ashore facility via a bridgehead. Walcon was involved from concept to completion and the berths have been specially designed to retain the unique character and flavour of Yarmouth. Fully serviced using Rolec equipment, the new berths will be a huge asset to visiting yachtsmen for many years to come. At Lymington on the mainland shore opposite Yarmouth, Walcon Marine has also completed new fully serviced berths in the Lymington River for Lymington Harbour Commissioners. The 200 metres of Walcon’s concrete Jumbo Walifloats with wave attenuating characteristics, together with System 21 walkway and finger pontoons, will give 70 much needed berths for local yachtsmen, with access via the existing visitors’ facility. The contract was won in a tender process and once again Walcon’s versatile barge Walcon Wizard came into its own for the piling process. The biggest contract in the Solent this year has been the total rebuild of Universal Marina on the upper reaches of the Hamble River. With around 240 berths, the whole marina had to be dredged by contractors and then piled by Walcon Wizard before the System 2000 berths could be installed. The fully serviced berths are now ready for occupation and give the Hamble River yet another first class berthing facility for both power boats and yachts up to 20 metres in length. Commenting on another successful year, James Walters, Managing Director of Walcon Marine, said: -“We are delighted to have had so many contracts in the Solent area over the past year and have been working non-stop to complete them in time for the new season. Our job has been made easier with the use of Walcon Wizard, our own self-propelled piling barge, which has enables us to do all our own piling, thus saving time and extra contractors fees. We look forward to more contracts in the Solent area for next year.” 23rd August 2006 For more information, please contact:James Walters, Managing Director, Walcon Marine.
